The territory siezed by the IDF in Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime is vital for Israeli security, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir said Sunday during a field tour and security assessment in the area.
"The space is a vital space," said Zamir, who was accompanied by Northern Command head Maj.-Gen. Ori Gordin, Division 210 head Brig.-Gen. Yair Falai, and other senior officials. "We entered here because Syria fell apart, and therefore we hold key points and are on the front lines to best protect ourselves."

A number of civilians entered the security barrier area separating Israel from the Gaza Strip, but did not cross into the Strip, the IDF announced on Sunday.
"IDF soldiers were deployed to the scene, arrested the civilians, and returned them safely," the military noted.
"The civilians were transferred to the care of the Israel Police. We emphasize that the civilians did not cross into the Gaza Strip. Approaching the barrier area is dangerous and interferes with the activities of the security forces in the area," the military concluded.

The military also admitted that its initial reports on the incident, based on reports from soldiers on the ground, were false.
The IDF on Sunday announced that it is firing a deputy commander of Sayeret Golani, a major, and censuring Brigade 14 Commander Col. "T" for their conduct in a March 23 incident in which the military killed 14 International Red Crescent medics in Gaza nd seriously wounded another.
In addition, the IDF spokesperson acknowledged that some of the initial reports that it put out about the incident, in terms of whether the medic vehicles had their headlights on or not, and other issues, were false because some of the information it was initially given by the soldiers in the field was false.
Once the IDF Fact Finding Mechanism Unit, led by Maj. Gen. (res.) Yoav Har Even probed the issue, he found that some of the initial information provided had been false and strived to correct it in an April 5 interim report.
