Hadera ex-deputy mayor suspected of rape

Hadera's former deputy mayor, Shmuel Levy, was arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of rape and a series of additional sexual offenses. Levy is also suspected of illegally confining one or more the alleged victims.

The former officials is also being investigated on suspicions of accepting bribes and fraud.

During Levy's arraignment at the Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court on Thursday, the police representative to court, Insp. Eli Aharoni, said police were aware of five women who allegedly submitted complaints against Levy.

Aharoni's attorney, Yair Nadshi, disputed the police's account, saying it was not at all clear that formal complaints had been filed with police alleging sexual offenses.

Police asked the court to extend Levy's custody by 15 days.

"I have been convinced that there is a reasonable suspicion that he carried out all of the offenses attributed to him," said Judge Halit Salish in her ruling.

Halit extended Levy's custody by eight days.
