Shahar Pe'er advanced to the second round of the Italian Open in Rome on Monday after Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland retired during the second set of their first-round match.
Pe'er, who is ranked No. 15 in the world and seeded 11th in the $1,340,000 tournament, was leading 6-0, 2-0, when Radwanska (46) was forced to withdraw due to a wrist injury.
Pe'er will next face Ai Sugiyama of Japan (25), who defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia (No. 42) 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in the first round on Monday. Pe'er has faced Sugiyama once in the past, winning 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-4, in the round of 16 in Cincinnati in 2005.
Pe'er opened Monday's match with a love service game and within 27 minutes wrapped up the first set.
Radwanska continued to struggle in the second set. After being broken for the fourth time in the match in the second game of the set she chose to retire.
