Started playing career at Paris Saint Germain, where he was made captain. The team won the league twice in 1983/84 and 1985/86 and the cup in 1981/82.
Joined Racing Paris from 1987 to 1990.
Moved to Cannes from 1990 to 1992.
Won 70 international caps with France - his greatest achievement being winning the 1984 European championships where he played in the midfield with Platini, Giresse and Tigana - known as the four musketeers.
Also played in the 1986 World Cup where France lost in the semifinals to Germany.
Began managerial career at Cannes in 1993/4.
Moved to PSG as manager in 1994, where he won two League Cups, two France Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1996.
In 1997 he took up the coaching position at Athletico Bilbao, where he won the Cup of the King of Spain in 1998
