Local Track: Kenyan takes TA marathon

Kenya's Daniel Kones won the Tel Aviv marathon on Friday morning, crossing the finish line in a time of 2:38:06. Kones, 28, was one of only a handful of international runners who participated in the city's first marathon in 15 years. The fastest Israeli was 35year-old Modi'in resident Shai Pipman who finished second overall in 2:51:109, while third-place David Raskai, 46, from Ashkelon, came in a minute and 35 seconds later. The women's race was won by veteran Israeli long distance runner Orna Blau in 3:07:14. Pipman said he was happier with his achievement than with his time, which was far from his aim and personal best. The event was intended to be more of a celebration of Tel Aviv's centenary than a high level professional race, and this was reflected in the positive atmosphere seen throughout the course. Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai had the privilege of sounding the starting horn at 6:45 a.m. and said he was delighted with how things worked out. "I am very happy to see a successful marathon here," Huldai said. "We have seen some good work, nice weather and most importantly a great atmosphere. The city is a sporting center for many residents and we hope to continue this event." Some 1,200 people ran in the 42 kilometer full marathon while another 9,000 took part in the 10k and 5k races. The 10k was won by Asmara Ngosa in 32:11 while Mary Alias won the women's section in 36:14.
