Israeli female swimmer to compete in Beijing

The 27-year-old Gostomelsky hopes to make-up for her disappointing performance in Athens.

24 days to go - Anya Gostomelsky - 100m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, 50m freestyle Israel's only female swimmer in Beijing, Anya Gostomelsky will be competing in her second straight Olympic Games. The 27-year-old Gostomelsky will be hoping to make-up for her disappointing performance in Athens where she finished 26th in the 100 meter backstroke and in 35th place in the 50m freestyle. Gostomelsky, who made Aliya at the age of 10 from the Ukraine, won a bronze medal at the European Short Course Championships in 2006 (50m backstroke) and has finished as high as seventh in the continent's long course championships (100m backstroke in 2004). She met the Olympic Committee of Israel's criteria for the Beijing Games by finishing in 10th place in the 100m backstroke at March's European Championships and will be hoping to reach the semifinals of the same event in China in a few weeks time.
