May 4 is celebrated around the world as "Star Wars Day," mainly because the date sounds like "May the force be with you," a common greeting in the classic science fiction movie series.10 Facts About the "Star Wars" Universe for May the 4thSince the first Star Wars film hit theaters in 1977, the franchise has evolved into a $70 billion media empire and is currently the fifth-highest-grossing media franchise of all time.In the years since, the series has launched three film trilogies, standalone anthology films, several TV series and a vast expanded universe that has been the focus of countless books, video games and comics.It has also sparked what is arguably the most well-known and dedicated fandoms of all time, resulting in the world's largest fandom organization: The 501st Legion, a group of diehard Star Wars fans wearing homemade film-appropriate costumes of some of the franchises most iconic characters – typically stormtroopers.The organization has branches all over the world, and established an first outpost in Israel in September 2019.
