A senior US State Department official said Wednesday "it is imperative" that Hizbullah and its allies not succeed in their efforts to subvert Lebanese democracy and to block creation of a tribunal to try the suspects in the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Assistant Secretary of State David Welch made the comment as he described the efforts of the United States and other countries to help resolve the current crisis in Lebanon and create the conditions for "a strong, sovereign Lebanon."
Testifying before the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on the Middle East, he also expressed concern about what he called the "highly porous" border between Lebanon and Syria.
He noted that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had reported that Israel had provided the UN with detailed intelligence indicating "serious breaches of the arms embargo across the Lebanese-Syrian border."
