US general: Bush Iraq plan viable with cooperation

The US Army general who would carry out President George W. Bush's new Iraq war plan says he believes that it can quell the sectarian killing. He cautioned against expecting quick results, however, and stressed that no amount of US effort will succeed unless Iraqis learn to compromise.
Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, at his Senate confirmation hearing to replace Gen. George Casey as the top US commander in Iraq, also promised to speak up if he should determine later that the new plan is failing.
Petraeus painted a mostly bleak picture of Iraq nearly four years into the war, and he stressed that the US military needs new, "greatly increased" contributions from other federal agencies to stabilize a country torn by political divisions and hobbled by a weak economy, a battered infrastructure and corrupt police.
