UN agency: Israel should allow food into Gaza Strip

The head of the UN aid agency for Palestinian refugees on Tuesday urged Israel to end Gaza's blockade and allow food into the city. Karen Abu Zayd said that now is the "worst period we ever seen" and that the agency's warehouse that stores food supplies for the Gaza Strip is "empty." She spoke Tuesday on the sideline of a two-day meeting in Jordan of the agency, known as UNRWA, and donor countries. Abu Zayd also urged donors to increase financial aid, warning that UNRWA's budget deficit this year and the first quarter of 2009 will reach around $160 million.
