EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Middle East peace envoy Tony Blair will travel to the Middle East next week to help find a solution to the Gaza border crisis, a senior EU official said Thursday.
"All of them will try to work together with all the parties - that is the Egyptians, that is the Israelis, and that is, of course, the Palestinian Authority - to find a solution to a better freedom of movement, of access, particularly on the Rafah crossing," EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner told reporters at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Speaking after a phone call with Mideast mediators known as the Quartet, Ferrero-Waldner also stressed it was important to ensure that Palestinians had access to basic supplies.
"I think it is highly important that the Palestinian population gets access to humanitarian aid, to basic needs - food, water - and of course fuel, which is so important ... not only for hospitals but also normal households," Ferrero-Waldner said, adding she was ready to provide as much infrastructure and equipment as possible.
