Report: PA, Israel negotiating for release of top Hamas parliamentarian

The Palestinian Authority is in contact with Israel for the release of a senior Hamas member of parliament, Dr. Aziz Dweik, the London-based paper Al-Quds al-Arabi reported Monday. According to the unnamed sources quoted in the report, the purpose of Dweik's release would be to "prevent Hamas from appointing [Dweik's] replacement, Ahmed Bahar, to the position of Palestinian Authority President in January 2009 under the argument that PA President Mahmoud Abbas's political power is gone."
