The Palestinian Authority's Interior Minister Said Siyam, a Hamas leader, said Tuesday that Syria was ready to train Palestinian police officers and government employees.
"Syria is ready, as always, to offer all the support and facilities," Siyam said after meeting with Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa in Damascus. He did not elaborate on details of such training.
The interior minister said he talked with al-Sharaa about Syria's relations with the Hamas-led Palestinian government and about other regional issues. Siyam also said he relayed PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's gratitude for Syria's support to the Palestinian people.
Siyam arrived in Damascus late Sunday to follow up on agreements made last month between Syrian leaders and Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar.
When Zahar visited Damascus in April, he announced that Syria would allow entrance to Palestinians traveling on Palestinian Authority passports.
Earlier this month, Syria admitted 244 Palestinian refugees, including 70 children and 41 women, who were stranded on the Jordan-Iraq border. Syria had agreed to take the refugees after Zahar's visit.
