After years of waiting, Kuwaiti women are getting the chance to run for parliament sooner than they expected, due to a surprise twist of politics - so now they're rushing to convince voters in this conservative nation on the idea of female politicians.
Kuwait had been due to hold parliament elections in summer 2007, the first national vote scheduled since women were given the right to vote and run for office in 2005.
But on May 21, the emirate's ruler, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, suddenly dissolved the all-male 50-member parliament and ordered early elections for June 29. So women who thought they had more than a year to plan their campaigns suddenly have only five weeks.
