Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas met Saturday in Algeria with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his way back home after a tour that included stops in Europe and the United States.
Abbas told reporters that his talks with top officials in the Muslim North African country would "inform our Algerian brothers of the evolution of the situation of the Palestinian cause."
He met with Bouteflika after being received at the airport Saturday morning by Algerian Foreign Minister Mohamed Bedjaoui, a government official said. Details of the meeting were not immediately made public.
Abbas planned to remain in Algeria for "iftar," the fast-breaking meal during the fasting month of Ramadan and head Sunday to Egypt for talks with President Hosni Mubarak, the Palestinian leader's office said.
He will also visit Jordan for talks with King Abdullah II before returning home Tuesday, his office said.
The Palestinian leader stopped in Egypt and Jordan earlier this month before visiting France, Spain and Washington.
