'Big brother' reaches Ramat Hasharon

A municipal spokesman said the tender will be issued in the next month and the cameras should be in place by the end of 2008.

Ramat Hasharon is planning to follow the lead of several other cities and install closed-circuit security cameras in numerous public places, reports local.co.il. The city is planning to issue tenders for the installation of the cameras in the coming weeks. The decision comes after several weeks of increased vandalism and crime by youths kept out of school by the prolonged teachers' strike. According to the report, the city has decided to install cameras at schools and in other public places, in order to be able to see criminal activity "in real time" and apprehend offenders. A municipal spokesman said the tender will be issued in the next month and the cameras should be in place by the end of 2008. No cost estimates were given for the project.
