Driver loses truck due to environmental breaches

The Supreme Court has reached an unprecedented decision to confiscate permanently the truck.

The Supreme Court has reached an unprecedented decision to confiscate permanently the truck of a driver who repeatedly breached environmental laws, reports Yediot Haifa. The decision paves the way for other repeat offenders to lose their vehicles permanently, and authorities said it should be regarded as a warning. According to the report, the truck driver had his vehicle confiscated about six months ago for breaching environmental laws in the Daliyat al-Carmel area. As has happened in such cases until now, the Haifa magistrates' court released the truck on certain conditions. But when the driver was caught once again, the case went to the Haifa district court, which decided that the vehicle should not return to its owner. The driver appealed to the Supreme Court, which decided that in view of the repeated offenses, the truck should be permanently confiscated. A spokesman for the Ministry for Environmental Protection said the decision was "unprecedented" and had wide-ranging consequences for all environmental offenders of this type. The spokesman said the decision would strengthen the ministry's ability to enforce environmental protection laws.
