University heads reject senior lecturers' proposal for arbitration to determine salary erosion.

Monday night's meeting between university presidents and representatives of the Senior Lecturers Union ended without success and at the meeting's conclusion, the presidents decided to petition the National Labor Court with a request that it provide legal assistance to bring an end to the protracted lecturers strike.
The university presidents said they would urge the court to enforce negotiations and to set a goal of January 13 for their conclusion. The presidents have said that if the strike continues beyond that date, the university semester would be canceled. Lecturers said that the petition was effectively a request for an injunction forcing them back to work.
University presidents urged the lecturers to agree to arbitration proceedings which would determine how much their salaries had been eroded - the issue at the heart of the dispute.
The lecturers came to Monday night's meeting with an arbitration offer but the presidents rejected the proposal, saying that the Finance Ministry would never agree to it.
