The Hizbullah attack on an IDF border patrol and the kidnapping of reservists Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser which sparked the Second Lebanon War could not have been prevented, a senior officer in the soldiers' battalion said on Tuesday.
Coinciding with the war's first anniversary, Regev and Goldwasser's battalion returned to active reserve duty on Tuesday for urban combat training at the IDF's Ground Forces Center near Ze'elim.
"There was no chance to change the outcome," the officer said. "It doesn't make a difference who would have been there, the outcome would have stayed the same."
The officer said he was not aware of the details of the efforts that were being done to rescue the abducted soldiers but that he believed it would take a long time, like it did to return the bodies of three IDF soldiers kidnapped by Hizbullah in 2000.
"We have a lot to improve but I can't think of one specific thing that, had we done it better, we would have prevented the kidnapping," he said. "On the battalion level I can't find anything that we could have done differently or better."
