Peres grants clemency to Naomi Blumenthal

President Shimon Peres granted clemency to former deputy minister of national infrastructure Naomi Blumenthal, who was convicted of bribery last year, Israel Radio reported on Monday. Blumenthal's children appealed to then-acting president Dalia Itzik to pardon their mother, in the hope that she could avoid going to prison and instead be assigned additional community service. Itzik decided to leave the decision to Peres. According to Army Radio, Peres's office refused to respond to the report that he had pardoned Blumenthal.
