Opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu was questioned under caution by the National Fraud Investigation Unit Tuesday in connection to public opinion poll results allegedly conducted with misappropriated funds that were provided to him during the elections.
The Likud Party chairman was implicated during a wider fraud squad probe into suspected misdoings by Professor Yaakov Katz, formerly a senior official in the Education Ministry and Netanyahu's personal pollster. Katz was arrested seven months ago on suspicion of misappropriation of funds, fraud, and breach of trust.
Authorities allege that Katz transferred funds from the ministry to a private research center he ran. The findings of polls conducted by the center were then passed on to Netanyahu, who failed to report them as campaign contributions, according to the allegations.
Sources close to Netanyahu said the incident in question happened more than 18 months ago, and was unlikely to result in any "dramatic consequences."
Netanyahu has been exonerated by several other investigations conducted by the National Fraud Squad.
