An IDF armored corps soldier who was seriously injured in a training exercise overnight Wednesday succumbed to his injuries Friday. An initial inquiry indicated that Pvt. Ma'ayan Rotenberg of Kibbutz Beit Haemek had been conducting routine lateral movement of the tank's cannon when his head got caught between the cannon and turret. The accident, which occurred at the Shizafon base in the Arava, was apparently the result of a technical failure, the army said. Upon receiving word of the incident, a medical team was rushed to the scene and began treating Rotenberg, who was then evacuated by helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. Rotenberg was due to celebrate his 19th birthday next week. In two other accidents this month, an IDF soldier was killed when his Hummer jeep overturned near the Gaza Strip, and a reserve soldier was killed while five others were injured, when their APC overturned during training in the Golan Heights.
