As the Knesset plenum swore in Prof. Daniel Friedman as the country's new justice minister on Wednesday, the Israel Prize laureate announced that he planned to "continue to cooperate fully with all officials in the judicial system, to strengthen the power of the law, to improve what needs improvement and to maintain the honor of the courts."
Friedman made no other speech following the Knesset vote to appoint him to the position, but Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said at the opening of the Knesset session that he was convinced that Friedman would succeed in implementing reforms in the justice system.
"Friedman's service will ensure the preservation and protection of the rights of the citizens of Israel - and first and foremost, protection of the honor of the Supreme Court," he said.
