Two boys in the North who were celebrating Id al-Adha with firecrackers are in very serious condition and in substantial risk of losing their sight, Safed's Ziv Hospital said on Thursday. Two others were suffered lighter injuries and are being treated for bleeding from their eyes. The four are ages eight to 14. The boys live in Tuba, Sajur and Salame and are all hospitalized in Ziv's ophthalmology department. Its head, Dr. Yossi Pikel, said the two more seriously injured children suffer from penetrating wounds to their eyes and deep cuts in the back of their eyes, and one boy also suffered damage to his cornea. The two others were injured by the explosive force of a firecracker thrown near them. The Ziv doctor called for a public information campaign throughout the country to warn against playing with firecrackers, and punishment of those who import and sell dangerous explosives. The Muslim Festival of the Sacrifice is not the only one on which firecrackers are used dangerously; they are also misused on Purim, which is three months away. Pikel said that in recent years, the use of firecrackers to celebrate weddings and religious holidays had become more common and that that this was reflected in the hospitals.
