Labor Party chairman and Defense Minister Ehud Barak is planning sweeping reforms to the party, chairman of Labor's Constitution Committee Moshe Shahal told MK Amir Peretz Thursday night. Army Radio reported that according to Shahal, Barak plans to change the party's primary system and instigate budget cuts to Labor Party institutions, including the party's central committee. Senior Labor officials said that Barak's reforms would also affect the party list by reserving certain places. Army Radio said that Peretz informed Shahal that he intended to appeal to an external court if Barak's planned changes were implemented. The reforms planned by the party chairman could weaken sectors that supported Peretz and his allies in the party, such as MK Yoram Marciano, making it less likely for Peretz to win votes in the next primary.
