New legislation bars draft-dodgers or deserters from receiving state-funded scholarships. The law was proposed by MK Yoni Chetboun of Bayit Yehudi.Any university or state-sponsored college student who neither served in the IDF nor performed national service and did not receive an exemption is not eligible for government scholarships, such as funding for doctoral research, the Perach Tutorial Project or any others provided by the Education Ministry.The law passed on Monday night with 33 in favor, eight opposed and two abstentions.According to army numbers on draft-dodging, it will apply to 5,000 people per year.“The Knesset made it clear that law-breakers need to be rejected not rewarded,” Chetboun said. “It is unacceptable that draft-dodgers receive a prize from the government.”The Bayit Yehudi MK called it his “moral imperative as a lawmaker to stop this farce.”The legislation had support from the opposition and the coalition, with MKs from Likud, Yesh Atid, Yisrael Beytenu, Shas and Labor cosponsoring it.
