Hadas Ayash, 60, from Kiryat Tivon, drowned Monday in an inner-tubing mishap on the Cahabon River in Guatemala, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.Ayash was on a tour organized by Desert Queen, which puts together tours aboard for women. The Foreign Ministry said Israel’s embassy in Guatemala was working with her family and the local authorities to facilitate the return of her body for burial.Ynet quoted another one of the participants on the trip, Liran Eldar, as saying that the tubing on the river was not an “extreme” trip. “It’s like tubing in the Jordan River in the summer,” she said.The accident took place near a natural bridge called Semuc Champey, which is a popular tourist attraction. The group arrived in Guatemala on Saturday.“There is a permanent attraction there, nothing extreme, nothing crazy, just simple tubing. We split into two groups, with each tube being tied to the others,” Eldar said. “I was in the second group. When we reached the end, suddenly we noticed the other group had split in two and someone flipped over.”She added that the rescue and medical teams arrived on the scene almost immediately.A statement from Desert Queen read, “We share in the family’s deep sorrow. At this time, the case is being investigated locally and the rest of the group will return to Israel as soon as possible.”
