Yemen cease-fire to start Tues. despite fighting

A cease-fire ending three years of fighting that claimed thousands of lives between the Yemeni government and Shi'ite Muslim rebels was due to commence on Tuesday, a top mediator said Monday. The announcement by Yasser al-Awadhi, a Yemeni lawmaker acting as a mediator, came as fighting continued in the northern Sada province, where local tribal leaders said at least six soldiers were killed and one injured Monday. "The fighting was heavy and all kinds of weapons were used by both sides," said one tribal leader on condition of anonymity because the sensitivity of the issue. His account could not be independently verified, and the army was not immediately available for comment.
