World War II bomb found in Budapest; thousands evacuated from homes

Municipal officials say up to 16,000 people are being moved from a Budapest neighborhood while explosives experts deal with a huge World War II bomb found at a construction site. Officials from Budapest's Ninth District say disarming and taking away the 2,000-kilogram (2.2-ton) bomb could take until late Tuesday. The bomb was found Monday at an old mill which was being torn down. It is among the largest found in the city since 1945. Thousands of unexploded bombs are believed to be buried around Budapest, which was heavily bombed by US and Russian forces near the end of the war. Last week, some 10,000 people were moved from homes while a smaller bomb was disarmed in a northern part of the city.
