The United Nations has shown great interest in Malaysia's offer to contribute troops to a peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon and a decision is likely to be made soon, Malaysia's foreign minister said Tuesday.
Malaysia recently offered about 1,000 troops for a UN force, but Israel objected because the mostly Muslim Southeast Asian nation doesn't recognize the Jewish state.
"They (the UN) have taken great interest in our offer," Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar told reporters. "We will wait for the indication soon."
Neighboring Indonesia _ which also has no ties with Israel _ said Saturday it will send up to 1,000 troops to Lebanon after Israel dropped its objection to its peacekeepers. The reason for Israel's shift of position on Indonesian troops was not immediately clear.
