Terrorists kill 3 security personnel killed in Pakistan

Assailants reportedly fire rockets and hurl grenades at joint police and Frontier Constabulary post.

Suspected Islamic terrorists attacked a roadside security post in northwestern Pakistan, triggering a gunbattle in which two paramilitary troops and one policeman were killed, an official said Sunday. Assailants fired rockets, assault rifles and hurled grenades at the joint police and Frontier Constabulary post late Saturday near Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province, said Zulfikar Khan, a local police official. Police and paramilitary forces retaliated, sparking a clash with the attackers in which two troops and a policeman were killed while six other security personnel were injured, Khan said. At least one attacker was seriously wounded but other fighters took him with them as they fled, he said quoting witnesses. The fighting occurred near Darra Adam Khel, a tribal town around where security forces have battled Islamic militants in deadly clashes recently. Violence tied to pro-Taliban militants has spiked in recent months in northwestern Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan, adding to the woes of President Pervez Musharraf, a close US ally, who has vowed to end Islamic extremism in his country.
