Reports: Police in Bangladesh arrest former Prime Minister Khaleda
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF
Police arrested former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her son Monday on charges of corruption and misuse of power in awarding contracts to operate two container terminals during her latest term, news reports said.
Zia was the second former prime minister arrested in recent months as the military-backed interim government presses a campaign under emergency rule to root out corruption in Bangladesh's political class before holding new elections, expected later next year.
Zia's archrival - former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina - has been detained since July on extortion charges. The two women head the country's two biggest parties and their supporters have frequently engaged in deadly street clashes, undermining the country's stability.
