Pope "deeply saddened" by Myanmar cyclone, appeals for international aid

The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI is "deeply saddened" by the devastation wrought by a cyclone in Myanmar.
He is appealing to the international community to quickly gather aid for the stricken Asian country.
The Vatican says the pope is praying for the thousands killed by the cyclone and for those left homeless or suffering. He is also confident that the international community will respond with help for Myanmar's people.
Benedict's reaction was relayed in a telegram sent Tuesday by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone to Archbishop Paul Zinghtung Grawng, head of Myanmar's Catholic Bishops Conference.
