A major earthquake struck northern Chile on Wednesday.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury from the region, but it was felt strongly in the capital, 1,260 kilometers to the south.
The US Geological Survey calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.7. It struck at 10:40 EST and was centered about 170 kilometers north of Antofagasta.
