Two Israeli bomb-sniffing dogs will put their noses to work in California's Bay Area.
Pups for Peace, a nonprofit that trains dogs to work in security, paid $20,000 for the intense training for Smaya, a yellow Labrador, and Jerry, a German shepherd. Their handler, Sheriff's Deputy Michael Saliba, also needed to learn a bit of Hebrew, the language the dogs understood.
During their weeks together in Northern Israel, the three searched bus stops and streets for traces of explosives.
The dogs will need to be retrained often to make sure their noses are sharp for their work investigating suspicious packages and public events in the south San Francisco Bay area, Saliba said.
