Britain may extend terrorist detention period

Britain may try to extend the length of time terrorist suspects can be held without trial, despite a parliamentary defeat on the issue, the government's law-and-order chief said Tuesday. Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he might reconsider the 28-day detention period agreed by Parliament when he introduces new anti-terrorism legislation in 2007 or 2008. "I don't think we should prejudge and say what we have got on the length of detention is there forever," Clarke told the House of Commons home affairs committee.
