Al-Qaida's No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, presented an eulogy for a slain Afghan Taliban commander in a new audiotape reportedly released on Tuesday, according to a US group that monitors militant messages.
The SITE Institute did not say how it obtained the audiotape, but has been known to obtain forward copies of al-Qaida messages.
The new tape's authenticity could not independently be confirmed, but a militant web site that usually gives forward notice of al-Qaida messages had announced earlier Tuesday an upcoming new tape by al-Zawahiri.
SITE said in a statement that al-Zawahiri's audio tape, which it said lasted 6 minutes 23 seconds, presented condolences to the Taliban for the loss of Mullah Dadullah, a one-legged commander who orchestrated suicide attacks and beheadings before dying of gunshot wounds in a US-led operation on May 12 in southern Afghanistan.
