Lithuanian science academy signs cooperation agreement with Israel

The agreement stresses the countries’ desire to initiate and encourage cooperation among their researchers and to support exchange visits.

The Israeli and Lithuanian Academies of Science this week signed in Vilna a memorandum of understanding for scientific partnership.
 
Israel Academy president Prof. Nili Cohen and her Lithuanian counterpart, Prof. Valdemaras Razumas signed, with Lithuanian academy president Algirdas Butkevicius and Amir Maimon, the Israeli ambassador to Lithuania, looking on.
 
The agreement stresses the countriesע desire to initiate and encourage cooperation among their researchers and to support exchange visits. The two academies also agreed to hold joint conferences and workshops in a variety of scientific fields that would include at least eight young researchers from each country. The memo of understanding will be in force at least until 2020 and then be renewed with the agreement of Lithuania and Israel.
 
Cohen recalled the rich cultural tradition of the Jews of Lithuania over the centuries and the horrible events of the Holocaust that wiped out most of them.
 
Lithuanian prime minister Algirdas Butkevicius met with Cohen and discussed the advances in research in his country and noted that it has been learning from Israel’s successful experience of scientific cooperation with the EU.
