US state lawmaker proposes Muslim Sharia law ban

CHEYENNE, Wyoming — A Wyoming legislator proposed to change the state constitution to deny recognition of the Islamic legal system Sharia in state courts.
Republican Representative Gerald Gay said he lived under Sharia as an engineer working for oil companies in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s and 1990s. Gay said he believes Sharia is incompatible with American liberty.
Some other lawmakers said they see no need for the bill.
Cheyenne Democratic Representative James Byrd said adopting the bill would send the message that Wyoming is prepared to discriminate against other cultures and religions.
Gay's bill has been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee, but no hearing date has been set.
