Turkish court rules against freeing 2 elected MPs

ISTANBUL - A Turkish court ruled on Thursday against the release of two jailed opposition candidates elected in a parliamentary poll earlier this month, effectively barring them from taking their seats, NTV news channel reported.
The two candidates, journalist Mustafa Balbay and doctor Mehmet Haberal, were fielded by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) though they had been remanded in custody on suspicion of belonging to a secret network planning to topple the government. A lawyer for Balbay said the two men would appeal the ruling.
