South Carolina elects black Republican congressman

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina — South Carolina voters have elected the first black Republican to Congress from the Deep South since the 1800s on Tuesday.
State Rep. Tim Scott easily defeated the Democratic candidate and five minor-party candidates to win the seat left vacant by the retirement of Republican Rep. Henry Brown.
The 45-year-old Scott will be America's first black Republican congressman since Oklahoma's J.C. Watts retired in 2003.
