Report: Olmert to discuss political future with Ashkenazi

Former prime minister Ehud Olmert was expected to meet with former IDF chief of staff Lt.-Gen. (res) Gabi Ashkenazi on Thursday, Army Radio reported.
The meeting will likely be a consultation on whether Olmert should return to politics ahead of national elections in January, according to the report. Olmert has been reported to be courting Ashkenazi to join him in a Center-Left party that would challenge Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Likud. Ashkenazi can not legally run for the Knesset until his three year cooling off period ends.
Olmert met with former Kadima leader Tzipi Livni on Wednesday, but failed to make a determination if he would run.
The State Attorney's Office placed a hurdle in front of Olmert's potential candidacy on Tuesday, when it announced that it would appeal his July acquittals in the corruption trial against him.
