Police seize dogs used in underground dog fights in the Triangle

Detectives from the Taibe and Tire police stations on Wednesday arrested five men from Kalansua they believe ran an illegal dog fighting ring in the Triangle city.

Police and Ministry of Agriculture inspectors raided seven houses in Kalansua Tuesday where they found 10 dogs, mainly pit bulls, which were being kept in yards in cages and in severe neglect, police said.

In the houses police also arrested five local men in their 20s, who are suspected of holding the dogs to use in illegal dog fights, which can bring in very large sums of money in gambling revenue.

The dogs were stolen months earlier from a dog kennel on nearby Moshav Ben Tzur, police said.

At the moment, the dogs are in the custody of the Agriculture Ministry, which will decide what to do with them, police said.

Underground dog fights are rather popular in Israel, mainly in the Israeli Arab sector. The dogs are typically stolen and then trained to fight, and used to breed future generations of fighters.
