MK Mitzna appointed chairman of the Education Committee

Hatnua MK Amram Mitzna was appointed chairman of the Knesset Education, Culture and Sports Committee on Monday.
Mitzna was elected during a special session attended by Education Minister Shai Piron, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Knesset members from all factions, municipal leaders and educators.
Following his appointment, Mitzna said that the committee’s top priority will be to reduce the gaps and inequality between students of the periphery and the center as well as between Arab and Jewish students.
"We will be attentive to the groundbreaking initiatives coming from the field, we will monitored and criticize the Ministry of Education, but also act as a complementary body to it," said Mitzna.
Minister of Education Shay Piron welcomed the move and said that Mitzna is a “deep ally and partner.” 
“I will work together with the Committee to reduce the gaps in the education system and to provide equal opportunities for every student in Israel,” Piron made clear.
The committee will also focus on issues such as technological education, teachers’ training, informal education, and national service, among others. In sports, the committee will focus on the battling violence, intolerance and racism in the field.
Justice Minister Tzipi Livni congratulated Mitzna on the new position and said he is the "right person in the right place”. Livni added that his contribution to the committee “will be great and ethical and able to fight for the important things.”
