J'lem c'tee bypasses talks over land plot zoning near Gilo

Jerusalem's Local Committee removed from its Monday agenda a discussion on the request of a contractor to change the designation of land from a hotel to private residential units. The plot, which lies between Beit Tzafafa and Gilo, has already been approved for the use of a private entrepreneur, who recently decided that he'd rather build three apartment buildings instead.

The Local Committee made its protocol for this Monday public last Thursday, a few hours before the meeting between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Following a Ynet inquiry, the municipality released a statement which said that the committee is bound by law to discuss the developer's request, though it is likely to be denied since it's the city currently wishes to encourage the construction of hotel rooms, of which there is a shortage of in Jerusalem.

On Monday, the request was removed from the protocol. The municipality said in a statement that is was done “to examine the ramifications of changing the plot's designation from a hotel to private residential units, in light of the city's policy on this issue.” A spokesman for the municipality denied the notion that the committee might have removed the topic from the agenda to prevent unwanted hubbub in the current politically tense environment, and stressed that there was never a construction freeze in Jerusalem.
