IDF continues test of SMS system alerting of danger

The IDF's Home Front Command on Tuesday continued a five-day trial to send mass text messages to the mobile devices of citizens, a system which in the future could be used to alert the populace by SMS of incoming missile attacks.
Called “Personal Message,” the system has been under development for several years. It can deliver area-specific warnings - in Hebrew, Arabic, English and Russian - based on the projected incoming trajectory of a rocket or missile.
Residents of Haifa, Tel Aviv, Acre, Nahariya, Karmiel, Safed, Netanya, Ashdod, Ashkelon, and other cities received messages on Tuesday.
Approximately 50 percent of cell phone users currently have the capacity to receive the experimental messages, which is expected to increase with the future cooperation of cellular companies.
