Human Rights Watch condemns Turkey's use of terror laws

Human Rights Watch on Monday released a statement condemning Turkey's overuse of "anti-terror laws to prosecute" hundreds of non-violent Kurds, "as though they were armed militants, violating free expression, association and assembly."

While HRW "unequivocally" condemned Sunday's suicide attack in Istanbul, the organization said that the cases they reviewed "had nothing to do with violence such as the October 31 attack."

"When it comes to the Kurdish question, the courts in Turkey are all too quick to label political opposition as terrorism," HRW researcher and author of the report Emma Sinclair-Webb said. "When you close off the space for free speech and association, it has the counterproductive effect of making armed opposition more attractive."
