Herzog: Segregation in hospitals could lead to harassment of Israelis abroad

Amid reports of Jewish and Arab segregation in maternity wards, opposition leader Isaac Herzog called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Health Minister Yaakov Litzman "to wave a black flag in the face of the cancer of racism."
Herzog called on the pair to visit hospitals with him and "to make clear that racism is a betrayal of of Israeli principles."
The opposition leader's comments came after Bayit Yehudi MK Bezalel Smotrich expressed support for the practice of segregating maternity wards at the mothers' request in response to an Israel Radio report on the matter.
"Beyond violating the principles upon which Israel was founded, racial segregation in hospitals causes us serious international harm. The cancer of racism legitimizes anti-Semitism and is liable to lead to harassment of Israeli tourists all over the world," Herzog warned.
