Hamas: 'Israel exaggerating Schalit talks on purpose"

Israeli talk about progress in negotiations over the release of Gilad Schalit are intended to divert attention from the harsh actions the state carries out against Palestinian prisoners in its jails, Hamas official Mahmoud a-Zahar told an Egyptian newspaper on Monday.

Zahar said talks with the representatives of the jailed prisoners came only after Israel found out that the prisoners intended to hold a general strike.

The Hamas official added that the talks had failed and no new positions were introduced, contrary to Israeli media reports.
