Grant awarded for birthright follow-up

The Jim Joseph Foundation has awarded a grant of $250,000 to the Safed-based Livnot U’lehibanot program to expand its Northern Exposure post-birthright program.

The one-week program - comprised primarily of young adults immediately following their Birthright experience - offers an opportunity to encounter Israel through community volunteer work, challenging hikes, and workshops on Jewish values and meditation, while delving deeper into Jewish teachings.

“Our unique blend of open Jewish spirituality with hands-on community service creates a meaningful and intense Jewish experience which complements the other fine programs that the Foundation is supporting, and we are honored to be counted among them,” said Aharon Botzer, executive director of Livnot U’lehibanot.

“Livnot taps into the passion of many young adults to grow personally and to explore Judaism following their Birthright experiences,” said Jim Joseph Foundation Assistant Director Dawne Bear Novicoff. “The Foundation is excited to partner with Livnot to create even more opportunities for young adults to connect with Israel, to engage in meaningful Jewish learning, and to help build vibrant Jewish communities at home”

Founded 35 years ago, Livnot U’lehibanot has hosted several thousand young most unaffiliated Jews from the US, providing an Israel experience that attempts to simultaneously connects them to their heritage in Israel and to their heritage as Jews. Over 1,000 Livnot alumni have gone on to become active professionals throughout North American Jewish communities, including: Federations, Hillels, JCCs, ADL, BBYO, Jewish camps, synagogues, and day schools.
